Dwelling Places
Mission of Dwelling Places
"...until every child has a chest to rest his head upon and a place to call home."
The goal of DP is to ensure that street children (slum and abandoned babies) in Uganda are raised in a God-honoring family setting, with love and care. Workers act as “parents” to these children. Each child has a bed, clothing, food, and when ready, they attend school, a far cry from life on the streets.
Rescue
Children come to us in two ways: they are brought in by the police
or they choose to come live with us after we form friendships with them
on the street.
Rehabilitate
Through education, life skills, basic home responsibilities, and THE LOVE OF GOD the children begin to settle down are able to start the process of integration into society. We also work with street and slum families and help empower them toward a better future through micro enterprise, discipleship, and life skills training.
Reconcile/Relocate
If a child has a parent or extended family member to return to we strive to reconcile the family as long as it is in the child's best interest. If a child has no family we look into adoption, or a long-term care home outside of Dwelling Places. We also have our own pilot program to settle our children in what we call care homes that are similar to family style group/foster type homes.
Resettle
Once a child is placed into a loving family, we work to support the family and continue to proivde for the basic needs of the child, such as education, social welfare, etc. The family is placed in the Family Empowerment Program which teachers mother and caretakers skills in order to earn better incomes. Furthermore, if the family is living in a dangerous or unsuitable area, volunteers seek to help them rent or build a new home in a better locatiion.
